Magnet Perpetual Motion
Is this a perpetual motion machine and why not?
Balls are pulled up a ramp by a powerful permanent magnet then drop through a hole at the top, returning to their original position.
No. If they drop through a hole at the top, they won’t have returned to their original position, they’ll be below the top of the ramp, rather than at the base of the ramp. Work will need to be done to return them horizontally to the base of the ramp. (And you can’t use an inclined plane or chute to return them to the base of the ramp, because you’ve already declared that your magnet is strong enough to pull balls UP an inclined plane.)
