Perpetual Motion Generators

Is tidal energy evidence that energy can be created from nothing?
A lot of people say you can’t create energy, you can’t have perpetual motion, you can only turn energy from one form to another.
But the moon goes around the earth, forever and ever without requiring any additional energy. It drives the tides which represent a huge source of potential energy for earth. I mean it isn’t like the sun which is converting matter into energy, it is just dead kinetic energy.
Surely the energy expended that was necessary to start this orbit has more than been made up for just by the energy realized every second by tidal energy on earth for billions of years.
So isn’t this proof that energy can indeed be generated infinitely, without necessarily being turned from one form into another? Couldn’t this idea eventually be used to make a (space-based perhaps) generator that requires no fuel?
Nope, this is not an example of energy being made from nothing. This is, in fact, an example of energy being transformed from one form to another. The tidal energy comes from the rotation of the earth. As the tides dissipate energy, it slows the rotation of the earth. Eventualy the earth will slow to the point that it rotates no faster then the moon orbits, at which time the moon will stop moving relative to the earth. Since tides also come from the sun’s gravity (though to a much lesser extent), the earth will also eventualy stop spinning relative to the sun, or the day will slow down until it equals the year This means the sun will also stop moving in the sky (which will be very bad for life on earth).
Now, the earth is very massive, so it has a lot of rotational energy and it will take a long time to dissipate all that energy via the tides. So long in fact, that the sun will explode before the earth stops spinning. But, if the sun had an infinite lifetime, eventually the earth would stop spinning exactly due to this issue you bring up. Actually, we see these effects already. The earth’s spinning is slowing down. If you keep track, you may know that every few years a second gets added to the official universal time as defined by the atomic clocks. These extra seconds are not because the clocks are inaccurate (the clocks are so accurate that they would not lose a second in over a billion years). These extra seconds are added because the earth is slowing down. Evidence showing you exactly where your tidal energy comes from.
Conservation of energy is a very fundamental and well tested theory. And the tidal forces certainly do not violate it.

The Perpetual Motion Machine $149.00 The oldest known drawing of a perpetual motion machine was made by the French architect Villiard De Honnecourt about 1235. A few hundred years later, Leonardo DaVinci studied the concept in depth, and he also constructed several models – the models have not survived the ages, but dozens of his drawings have survived. Ultimately, he concluded that perpetual motion was indeed, impossible, and he aba… |
